io9 unveiled their top 100 scifi/fantasy shows a couple of weeks ago. Below is a condensed list and my own personal comments on the choices and placing of them. So starting from 100…..
100. Dead Set – Personally I wouldn’t have this is the top 100 at all. Big Brother reality TV sucks at the best of times and while I really like the thought of them all being eaten by zombies… it’s not true and the characters in it are just as annoying as those in the true Big Brother show/House.
99. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex- I’ve never watched this, but I’m not a fan of anime-style cartoons.
98. Dark Shadows – This was a 70s show. While it sounds familiar, I’ve not watched it. But on an interesting note, this is slated to be remade by Tim Burton with Johnny Depp rumoured to play Barnabus.
97. Thundercats – Thundercats, thundercats, thundercats hoooooooooo! What more do I need to say?
96. Aeon Flux – This was a cartoon for the MTV Generation. Not one I’ve watched, although I did see the film.
95. Warehouse 13 – I’ve yet to see this show, it doesn’t start in the UK until Tuesday 8th September, but I have it bookmarked ready to watch! Will report back on it once I’ve seen a couple of episodes.
94. Serial Experiments Lain – Another one I’ve never heard of – but then it is a cartoon, so doesn’t really feature on my radar.
93. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe – “I have the POWERRRRRRR!” Yeah another one from my youth. Dolph, while rather nice looking in his loin cloth, should, with all due respect, hide the film from sight forever!
92. Primeval – You know, I could never make my mind up about this show. Low budget if you compare it with most US shows, but there was just something about it that made me go back for more. Shame it’s been cancelled. The cast has been left in various eras of the past, a couple sitting in a tree waiting to be eaten. Would have been nice for it to have had an ending, but there are rumours of a US film being made so we may get some closure!
91. Static Shock – I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at the amount of cartoons in this list but another one I haven’t seen.
90. Surface – This show has only just been shown here in the UK, but by all accounts it was cancelled after one season so I didn’t bother catching up with it.
89. Transformers – who didn’t love this show? I know I did when I was growing up. I think the two films are pretty cool too, but I’m sad like that! I think it should have been in the top 20 at least.
88. Smallville – another one I’m surprised is so low in the 100. I’m not a huge fan of the show, but they’ve done it well and been going for a long time now.
87. Airwolf – Best thing about this show was the theme music.
86. Jake 2.0 – I watched a few episodes of this show. Mildly entertaining.
85. ALF – Who can forget ALF?
84. Heroes – I watched half the first season of this and it just didn’t grab me and pull me in. I might give it another try now it’s got beyond a season – which I wasn’t convinced it would do.
83. Buck Rogers in the 25th Century – If you’re looking for cheese, it doesn’t come cheesier than this!
82. Dead Zone -Another one I haven’t watched, but I quite fancy taking a gander at this one.
81. Pushing Daisies – Never watched this one. Frankly, I’m not sure it can really be classed as sci fi or fantasy.
80. Jericho – Again, not watched this one.
79. Eureka – What can I say about this? I absolutely LOVE this show. In the UK we know it as A Town Called Eureka (not entirely sure why they added to the name, but still..)
78. Land of the Lost – I didn’t watch this when I was a kid, but I do recall seeing the odd episode. I did, however, catch the film with Will Farrell in a month or so ago. Terribly, dire and unbelievably silly – a great film.
77. Planet of the Apes – I’ve seen all the films (including the remake). Can’t say I’m a huge fan, but the concept is interesting.
76. My Favourite Martian – I’m glad to say I’m too young for this one!
75. Jekyll – This mini series, casting James Nesbitt as Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, was phenomenal. Shame they only did one season, but I believe that was all they planned to do. This deserves to be much higher up than 75.
74. Kyle XY – I’ve not seen this one yet, think it’s being shown on one of the kids channels, but I wouldn’t mind catching an episode.
73. Incredible Hulk – Awwwwwww, was I the only one who thought Hulk was cute? Probably.. never mind! The latest remake (not the first one remake a couple of years ago) was great, really enjoyed that.
72. Journeyman – This had an interesting concept, but it got cancelled. Shame shows aren’t given a bit of time to get their feet under the table.
71. Star Trek – Voyager – I’m surprised to find this so low down in the ranking. But then I imagine most men only watched it for Seven of Nine!
70. Survivors – A little before my time as a Sci Fi watching fan.
69. Lost In Space – I can’t decide which was worse, the series or the film with the irrepressibly cute Matt le Blanc.
68. Being Human – I love this show. It’s a fascinating mix of soap opera style with paranormal entities – sounds terrible, but it gels in a really odd fashion.
67. Get Smart – Another one I was too young to really take any notice of.
66. Flash Gordon – I never watched the original black and white series, I was weaned on the film (soundtrack by Queen). The remake of the series was interesting. I don’t remember if it was cancelled or not.
65. Bionic Woman – more cheesiness. I suppose there couldn’t be a Bionic Man without a Bionic Woman…. the remake didn’t last long.
64. Earth: Final Conflict – I caught a couple of episodes of this, but I just didn’t find it overly interesting.
63. Thunderbirds – Thunderbids are GO! FAB…. another classic
62. Seaquest DSV – my first introduction to a couple of the De Louise brothers… they become better known in the Stargate series
61. The Jetsons – a cartoon. I watched this as a kid but didn’t really enjoy it.
60. Starblazers – I’ve never heard of this one.
59. 3rd Rock From The Sun – This show was a blast when it was on.
58. Greatest American Hero – I don’t think this one was shown in the UK
57. Adventures of Brisco County Jr – Another one I’ve never heard of.
56. Ultraviolet – I watched this mini series when it first aired and loved it. Picked up the DVD boxset a year or so back and tried watching it again… didn’t find it as good the second time around
55. Sliders – This wasn’t a bad show for its time – bit repetitive after a while.
54. Red Dwarf – Funny funny funny and deserving of a better spot than 54!
53. Space: Above and Beyond – I never really watched this show.
52. Knight Rider – The mighty Hoff! Come on, admit it everyone loves Hoff (for whatever reason!). And, face it, the car is cool! Lots of people slate the new series with Val Kilmer doing the voice of KITT, but d’you know what? I don’t care, I actually like it – and the revamped themetune is pretty good too (tried to find an mp3 of it, no luck so far tho! – anyone know of a copy let me know!)
51. True Blood – I’m watching season 1 of this at the moment in the UK – and also reading the first book (DeadUntil Dark – Charlaine Harris). I wouldn’t say either series or book are particularly outstanding, but there is something about them that brings you back for more… I just can’t put my finger on what it is… oh and the theme song (Bad Things by Jayce Everett is hot!)
50. Battlestar Galactica (the original) – I LOVED this show. Dirk Benedict (as Starbuck) was the subject of many youthful fantasies for me
49. Star Cops – Can’t say I remember this one.
48. Torchwood – I was enjoying it until it became a gay love-in. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against homosexuality, I just don’t want it shoved down my throat on a sci fi show at every given opportunity, any more than I want to see constant sex between heterosexuals every five minutes.
47. Mystery Science Theatre 3000 – I’ve never watched this.
46. Invader Zim – Back to cartoons again. Another one I didn’t watch.
45. The Six Million Dollar Man – Steve Austin… you knew you were safe to get up for a cup of tea when the slo-mo music started.. so long as that was playing, you were good to be out of the room.
44. The Outer Limits – seems like this show has been around forever!
43. Adventures of Superman – black and white show, too long ago for me.
42. Stargate Atlantis – This so should be in the top ten. I loved this show, I mourn its passing… and I lusted after Ronin at every opportunity!
41. Space Island One – Never even heard of this one.
40. Andromeda – I enjoyed the first few seasons, then Tyr Anasazi left and I lost interest. Man, that guy was HOT!
39. Quatermass – Another black and white show I didn’t see.
38. The 4400 – I watched half of series one, and get extremely bored. By all accounts the concept changed in Season 2, so I guess I might catch up with it again sometime.. I can’t believe this has a higher ranking than Stargate Atlantis
37. Supernatural – Number 37???????? No way..> NOOOOO WAY!!! With the gorgeous Dean and Sam, there’s no way this should be anything less than the top Ten…. incidently the new season starts in a oouple of months, I’m dying to see it!
36. Alien Nation – more like a soap opera with aliens… and Supernatural is below this??? WHY!!!!
35. Robotech – cartoon.. meh
34. Lexx – I never got into this show, it’s very odd.
33. The Avengers – I didn’t really like this show.. wouldn’t class it as sci fi or fantasy either.
32. Roswell – I liked this show. It wasn’t amazing or anything like that, but it was fun.
31. Quantum Leap – This had a great concept, but the final episode was just plain odd.
30. Mork and Mindy – classic comic sci fi. Nanu Nanu!
29. Batman Beyond – gasp, it’s a cartoon I actually like!
28. Venture Bros – Nother cartoon I’ve not heard of.
27. The Middleman – Again, never heard of this one.
26. Angel – Christ, he was sexy.. wasn’t he? And then we got hit with a double whammy when Spike joined the cast….. life won’t ever be the same again without this show… although David as Seeley Booth is even hotter than Angel.
25. Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles – I haven’t actually watched this show as I’m not quite sure how they’ve worked it out, seeing as Sarah knew nothing of Terminators until she met one.. and then she was pregnant with John…….. will catch it at some poitn and see.
24. The Prisoner – this show is a complete and utter headwreck and you can’t help but watch in fascination when it’s repeated on TV. I loved Rover, but seriously.. he wasn’t that scary.
23. Cowboy Bebopp – sounds peculiar, don’t think I’ll bother with this cartoon.
22. Space 1999 – Another show from my childhood that I loved.
21. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy – I loved the books, the original show was amusing, the film was surreal… but hey, I loved the books!
And so we hit the top 20…. now there are a few shows that have already been listed that I believe should have been in the top 20.. so let’s see what rubbish they’ve been supplanted by…..
20. Farscape – I never watched this show, my other half did before I met him… and it has two actors who crossed over into Stargate later on. I’d probably enjoy it, just didn’t have the time when it was on.
19. V – I remember everyone talking about this show but I really didn’t see what the fuss was about. We have the boxset now… and I STILL don’t know what the fuss was about!
18. Fringe -This show really messes with your mind, I love it.
17. Stargate SG1 – who wrote this list??? SG1 should be in the top 3!
16. Dollhouse – okay I like this show, the premise is fascinating.. but better than SG1 and Atlantis? I think not.
15. The Tick – more cartoony rubbish.
14. Futurama – This is a funny show. I always thought it was much better than the Simpsons.
13. Star Trek: DS9 – I didn’t really get into this show until it ended, but it was entertaining enough.
12. The Twilight Zone- another classic.
11. Blake’s 7 – I remember watching this with my dad
but I don’t really remember anything about it!
10. Lost – I love this show, it screws with your head and, for a change, you just can’t second guess what’s going on.
9. Battlestar Galactica (remake) – I just can’t come to terms with Starbuck being a woman.. it’s just wrong.
8. Babylon 5 – this merges with DS9 to me in so many ways… yeah yeah,I know all you trekkie or B5 fans will yell at me :p
7. The X Files – this was a great show until they focused too much on conspiracy theories instead of the other interesting things.
6. Buffy The Vampire Slayer – often imitated, never bettered.
5. Max Headroom – oh please! Someone sack the guy who wrote this list!
4. Star Trek: The Next Generation – “I am not a merry man!” – who can forget that classicline from Worf.
3. Firefly – I loved Serenity, the show was meh.
2. Doctor Who – So far, I’ve managed not to watch the new shows with Chris and David!
1. Star Trek – who’s surprised? Not me!
I’m actually quite disappointed with that list… I think maybe I should do my own.. only I don’t think there are 100 scifi/fantasy shows I like!
Anyway, for your listening pleasure, I’ve made a small grooveshark compilation of some of the theme tunes (the ones I could find anyway)… Enjoy!
